Engine ground
In Response To: I was puzzled too. ()

My Volvo Penta MD22 engine came equipped with a relay that only connects the ground to the engine when the start or stop switches are pushed. The rest of the time it's "floating ground" as the mechanic called it. (Don't forget the propshaft isn't the only conduit - the cooling system is also bringing the engine block in contact with sea water, and internal electrolysis is a concern.)
