Took off yesterday morning to try to at least get to Cabo, even if we could never catch up with the fleet. Owner had crew for trip back planning to meet him there. Couple of immediate problems-the engine was running rather hot, and the oil pressure had dropped to 15 psi (my older engine with 4000 hours on it runs 20 deg cooler, normal oil pressure 40-45 psi). But owner decided to go ahead, since engine was otherwise running OK. Then a bit after dark, off of Ensenada, owner tried to turn the engine on to make power and the transmission was jammed, and control has a start interlock requiring neutral. Checked the things we could easily, but nothing helped. So slow tacked all night, then called Vessel Assist for the rest of the trip back to San Diego. Of course, when we got back to SD found a reset switch for the transmission control that we missed rolling around in the dark with a flashlight. So very disappointed, but the looming engine problems that didn't get fixed probably mean the trip was a bit premature anyway. Owner will have to decide about next year now, but good experiene for doing that.
