Actually, it's been this way for years...

...it's even more ridiculous with regards to bascule bridges, as there is nothing approaching standardization of their clearances, as there is with the fixed bridges... I believe it's been about 10 years now, since Florida modified the clearance boards to read "Low Steel Clearance", and instructing you to "Add 4' At Center", or whatever...

This sort of stupidity boggles the mind, and creates a massive headache for the bridgetenders themselves, trying to convince a boater who knows he needs 25' clearance that he can make it under a bridge where the clearance boards are showing 22' - and I would suspect a lot of unnecessary openings are the end result...
