I never have understood those who do the mile by mile planning, when just out sailing. I have a friend, and if he leaves for two weeks, he has every nights stop planned out. I know lots of folks who figure their trip on an average of 150 miles a day. When doing an offshore hop, I figure on 100 mile days. If conditions are favorable and I make more, fine. If I don't make the 100 thats fine too. But I always use the 100 mile per day figure, and make my departure time so I can at destination around noon. Gives me lots of leeway, and I try very hard to never run a strange entrance after dark. I do have the advantage of being retired, so I have not much in the way of time constraints.
