Well...

The radar is not repairable anymore. That model was actually made by JRC and Raymarine will not touch it. I had an R20X and needed a part. Neither Raytheon (at that time) or JRC would supply the part.

As for the autopilot, There is a plastic gear in the type 1 and 2 drives that probably should have failed at least once in all those hours. That is the weak point in the drive. Now they only sell the metal gear and if you have that it should go a long, long time. The only other failure I have had with one of those drive is the motor brushes wearing out. On my type 2 drive, I could not get new brushes for the the original Klaxton motor - I had to make a pair from alternator brushes. Raytheon wanted to sell me a new motor for $350. That was some time ago. My 1985 vintage type 2 drive is still going strong but I carry a spare. If you are going offshore I would recommend spare course computer and drive. At the very least, if you have a plastic gear buy a metal one - Raymarine will sell you that. They are not hard to change but I would not want to do it mid ocean. I set my autopilot up with a heavy duty four pin connector so that it would be easy to swap drives.

You can function without Radar but the autopilot is essential. You need a backup or an alternative (windvane).

Bon Voyage.
