One year gear report: Poliglow

Now that I have gone through a full year after using Poliglow my overall impression is favorable. I see it as a reasonable treatment for faded gelcoat and much cheaper than painting, which may be the ultimate solution at some point, but I could keep using Poliglow indefinitely.

The shine is much more durable than wax and held up pretty well except for some wear areas where fenders were hanging. Renewal of one or two coats is as simple as washing the boat followed by applying the coating to the boat with a spongy applicator that is about 10" wide, and comes in the kit along with a smaller wipe for edges and hard to reach areas. Wear areas can be touched up mid-season, with just one or two coats. Dry-time between coats is about 1-2 minutes.

The initial surface prep work was fairly labor intensive, about equal to compounding, but the Poliglow application is wipe-on easy. After a year there were some areas where some oxidation showed beneath the coating because I hadn't prepped well enough prior to initial application; so that required removal of the Poliglow in those areas, followed by removal of gelcoat oxidation, then re-application. Removal of the Poliglow wasn't easy, requiring several applications and removal using the Poli-prep that comes in the kit. The maker says the shelf life is about 2 years but the product must be kept from freezing.

Phone support was excellent -- this is obviously a small family-run business and they answer the phone during business hours.
