Autopilot again

I am interested in everyone's opinion, so please sound in.
Needing to replace to old autopilot-autohelm 6000. I don't think any parts are salvageable (I wish I could at least use the drive, but I don't think so).
I could go the inexpensive route, get the CPT above deck- $2000 +/-; simple, but not very attractive, and I am not sure if it will bring me much if/when I move up (hoping to retire, and get a larger boat in which to take off), or go with a new below deck.
First, would you go above and save the money (I could take it off and use as backup on a new boat), or go below deck.
I have ruled out the Raymarine wheelpilot, as it does not seem up to the task at hand.
If below deck, what brand/model?
The boat is a 1987 Freedom 36/38.
I have just put in a new Garmin 4208 gps-radar, so a below deck would interface nicely.
Lastly, suggestions re:suppliers, installers etc. on Narraganset Bay.
