People often think of cruising as a way to live off the land. Also they like to think that it is a reasonable way to "drop out". One think different then before for us is that what breaks now gets fixed where ever were at. Usually at a great deal more then in the states. When we went "cruising" for 2 months in the summers anything that went wrong; if it wasn't life threatening we would wait till we had all my tools and a place to do the work and do it at home. Years ago (30 now) when we cruised on 10 bucks / day - that was our target, even then we were gone 15 months we never included a haul out in the cost!
