Imho there is no proper way. Chain is only as strong as the weakest link..

If you are using it on your anchor, wouldn't you want to sleep at night? no joiner link is as strong as a real link. Be safe. if you need longer chain, go buy new and use the other for something else.

- I like the idea of Hammer Links shown here...
  - i prefer double clevis connectors, but,
  - I agree, hammer links are the safest of the two approaches.
