Pressurized alcohol stoves

I have read the discussions here but never really experienced one until Saturday. I was pondering the Seward stove and decided to see if there was fuel in it, there was. Then I decided to see if the pump worked so I pumped it once. Then tried the valves and could see a small amount of fuel coming out of the burners. One match later we had a hell of a fire going on one burner. That was a little unnerving, but as the fire got taller I noticed that the alcohol was now leaking out of the bottom of the burner and filling the drip area under the burner, when that caught the inside of the boat was getting pretty hot. Shutting off the valve to that burner did not stop the leak and the fire got larger. Now it was really getting hot in the boat, I was concerned the padded vinyl overhead was going to start melting. I got the pressure cap loose on the stove, that seemed to slow down the flow. I finally got the fire out without any damage, but that was enough for me. The stove is now out and sitting on a storage shelf in the boat part boneyard in my workshop.

I understand why these are no longer made.
