on an OI 41 . . .
'Twas in Martinique if I remember correctly. We pulled in for fuel & water and stuff and my crew tried to light the stove. Got a little too much alcohol flowing so we had a little bit of a flare-up. No problem, you can put it out with water, right? Wasn't that one of the great selling points? So we flung water on it with great abandon. That seemed to do the trick. However . . . for some reason I glanced in to the engine space (this was a Stevens Yachts boat and Bill Stevens had specified acrylic doors to the engine space). I saw, floating merrily on the water in the bilge -- that same water we'd used as an extinguishant -- little blue flames.
Another time another boat . . was ashore getting provisions and my dear charter guest tried to light the stove . . . didn't know how . . . ended up blasting it with dry powder. They had a one-burner meal that night -- that was all I had time to clean.
