I much prefer the atmosphere of a small, prosperous fishing village in downeast Maine to any place we've visited in southern New England. A short walk up the road from the harbor gets you to the Bold Coast-Coast Cutler Preserve Trail, nearly 10 miles of unspoiled coastal hiking. For the less ambitious there is a shorter, +/-2 mile hike out to the Western Head accessed from a beach on the southern side of the harbor. This trail is beautifully maintained by volunteers with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.
