Have done this on three different boats with

good results. I use a length of rope from the shackle on the bobstay fitting tied with a rolling hitch to the anchor chain. Works as a shock absorber, increases the scope since it is closer to the water, keeps the anchor rode from chafing on the bobstay, and is attached to one of the thickest and strongest parts of a fiberglass boat. I agree with the idea of side gussets for the pictured fitting. Sorry, no pic of my wider bronze fitting, pictures are almost impossible for me to post from my Palm phone.
