I have decided ...

... to go with more of a network system. I don't like the idea of hanging antennas up whenever I need WiFi and having cables & connections running all over the place. I am installing a WiFi antenna on my radar mast/Edson platform & bracket, will run the cable inside the radar mast to inside the transome, then to a mounted access point tucked away some place dry and out of the weather. And from there via Ethernet to a Wireless Router, all permanently installed and powered through my 12V and breaker panel. Certainly more expensive, quite a bit more. But that will allow me to sit anywhere onboard I want when using my laptop, it will also allow anyone else on board to use their laptops at the same time. We try not to rely on WiFi that much while cruising, but when we want it, to pay bills, check multiple weather sites, and send & receive emails, it will be just like home and a nice luxury. Sad to say, but when WiFi is nearby, everyone piles in the dinghy to the nearest hot spot restaurant or whatever for a couple hours/day some times. Now all of us can be sitting on the boat, whenever we want, without setting up and taking down cables & antennas whenever we want to connect. I will probably go with air802.com, they have been very helpful and accessible for tech info over the phone, that right there is worth a lot to me.

A year or so ago I bought a WiFi antenna from RadioLabs. Some people love them. I thought they sucked, I never could get the antenna to work on my Mac, their tech help sucked even more, they rapidly through in the towel, as the rep told me over the phone, "the amount of money they were paying the tech to help me cost more than the antenna", so they decided tech help isn't worth it and I sent the darn thing back.

cheers, John
