An idling diesel does not generate a lot of heat relative to one that is working

We have a big alternator, and mechanical refrigeration, total about 5 HP. Yet the water heater gives only luke warm water after an hour running at 1200 rpm charging battery and pulling reefer down.

I suspect that you could idle for hours with no sea water circulation, although of course the salt water impeller will disintegrate.
