As I recall, Scott did research in Oxford, MD on the Swans and on ocean sailing. He supposedly wasn't much of an blue water sailor himself (at the time). His story still has a description of sailing in a hurricane around the Cape chasing the supertanker that is amazing. That an snorkling with deadly sea snakes near an oil rig (or something like that) ...

It was a fun read at the time.
