I have a Samsung Captivate (basically, the Galaxy S for the AT&T network) and generally have been very happy with it. However, the Android 2.1 support for the onboard GPS is very flaky (long lock-in times and lost signals). Android 2.2 fixes that, but introduces a new problem: Navionics cannot be downloaded from the Android Marketplace into 2.2 phones. You can hack it, but I haven't tried that.
In the meantime, I'm using EarthNC (http://earthnc.com/) and have been happy with that.
Oh, and I should mention that Android 2.2 is not supported by Samsung (yet). I installed a "leaked" version that has generally worked pretty well.
That's life in the Android world! Chaotic, but anything goes. If you want a nice, tidy world with all the sharp edges filed off, go with the iPhone!
