Talking about "old worn out gizmos" -- did you ever pick up a better low-amp anchor light? That Davis Megalight (or whatever you were using in the cockpit) wasn't noticeable even from 50 yards. You may want to consider treating her to a Bebi Owl light (link below) -- and for a few bucks extra they have an option for a daylight-sensor control so it doesn't run 24/7. You'd be surprised how bright it is for about the same amps (or less) than the Davis. (Save the Davis for a cockpit light though, because the Bebi is too bright for that.)
