Actually I recommend..

Actually I only generally recommend the single crimp ratchet tool from Sailors Solutions if crimping heat shrink crimp connectors. I don't recall recommending that one but if Nick likes it I am going to guess it is a decent tool.

For stripping the wire I use the Ideal Stripmaster Part No. 45-092. I own two of them and they are worth every penny I paid and then some. There are many strippers that will work, and also that sell for less money, but the most important thing to consider is how carefully you can strip with them and how carefully they strip the wire jacket without damaging the individual strands. The Stipmaster 45-092 does this with ease nearly 100% of the time even on UL 1426 wire.

It's somewhat important that you do not "nick" the wire or remove any strands when stripping and this is easy to do with UL146 multi-stranded marine wire. Strip, cut & crimp tools can easily ruin strands because the pull can be slightly twisted or slightly offset causing the cutter to slice wire strands. Over the years I have purchased and own two Ideal Stripmaster knock off products, one from Home Depot and one from a local hardware store. Both failed in short order despite looking nearly identical to the Ideal tool. Lesson learned...

Which ever stripper you use, always examine the wire after the strip to check for strand damage. If the wire will carry any sort of high load you'll want a good clean strip with all strands intact. I generally dislike "blade" strippers that don't have the proper sized holes for the wires being stripped. Both of my Ideal strippers, boat tool and home tool, have thousands of strips on them and they have never so much as hiccuped. The boat ones are a little more rusty but still continue to perform as they were intended. You can occasionally find them in the low $20.00 range but they normally sell for about $30.00 -35.00. I got my second set on a close out table at Home Depot when they decided they'd replace it with a cheaper & crappier version. I think I paid $12.00!!!

Just made over 70 strips this weekend alone, with my original Stripmaster which is over 15 years old.... Not bad for the price...
