I would disagree
If a loose foot is less efficient, why do many (or most) racer's use it?
Obvious answer: control-abilty
What little is gained by an "end plate" is more than lost in shape...
I would indeed have to change my outhaul.
Wouldn't that change your 'Cruising' status?

Two boats - loose foot.
I switched to loose foot the suggestion of my sailmaker
Had loose footed main on the old Freedom 25, 265'....
We had one of the first loose footed mains....
