...mounted on hooks. The hooks were put in the grommets when you raised sail. It took a bit more work but the net result was much less friction in the single line reefing system which IMHO made it work rather well. In the photo (before the sail was cleaned) you can sort of see the hook 'tail' in the first reef just above the second slug up from the boom. The blocks at the base of the boom on the mast and at the deck enabled the single line reef to come aft to the cockpit. It actually worked quite well for this 265' main.
Combined with full batten main and lazy jacks it made sail handling fairly manageable under all the conditions I encountered.
