the spar was built by Composite Engineering. They have had one fail, the only one in hundreds, apparently due to a faulty resin infusion. The owners were about 10 days out of California bound for Hawaii in the Transpac race. They were sailing along minding their own business in about 10-12, when they said "we heard something that sounded like sitting on a bag of potato chips, and the mast just crumpled over the side."
There was about 5 feet standing above the deck, they were able to salvage the mast, band it to the stump with SS bands (the banding machine is required equipment for the Transpac) and continue to Hawaii.
