I knew a bike builder and I wanted something that would suit my commute style... this was built just before the big wave of mountain bikes hit the market back in the early '80s.
It is Reynolds tubing (531 I think) put together to my measurements... the bike fits like a glove. It is heavy compared to CF bikes of today... but it is my "work bike," so the weight really isn't that much of an issue. I've always got a bag or two on it when I ride... and the lighting weighs a ton. I recently replaced that old Brooks saddle with a new one... and the bike just keeps going. It has Phil Wood hubs, Campy FD, friction thumb shifters that are no longer made... and a host of other little custom features.
I keep telling myself that I need to strip it down and get it repainted... but then I jump on and use it...
The red bike is a Sannino... a classic criterion racer with a Gali grouppo that is my "Sunday" bike... I go out from time to time and ride in group rides with it... but it too is steel, and these days a bit less comfortable than some of the new CF bikes out there. I am about this close to retiring it and just hanging it on the wall as "art."
