The cone clutch is much more reliable in a straight drive...

It is the saildrive unit itself that exacerbates problems with the cone clutch - any drive system that must make two right angle turns to reach the prop incurs significant more inertial slippage of the clutch. That's why saildrives and V drives have always been a deal breaker for me. (this aside from their more complicated and expensive to repair mechanism).
