I agree, there are just to many reasons not to use the "back splice". I use

the streight splice on the 8 strand 5/8 inch nylon I use on my port anchor which I use a lot. The line needs replacement but the splice is just fine. Once the line takes a set, it's not going anywhere. I swear, the more you use it the stronger the splice gets. I tried to take one out once to save a few links of chain but gave up and just cut the chain after a while.
