That's never been discussed here. The question of what's the difference between cruising and boating and how that relates to the way you look at what's important to you on your vessel.
Here's an example. A boater will use the VHF as the primary means of communications. When your cruising an SSB is generally more important. Not only for the fact that it allows for communication distance but also for security. If we're doing a passage through a known security problem area with another vessel we use the SSB on 2 megs for boat-to-boat communications. I would think you don't have an SSB aboard.
I need to keep in mind the mindset difference between boating and cruising. Having realized that and also the fact that from your posts you are a bit of a geek (Not a pejorative as I'm a bit of a geek as well) I think that the whole MMSI issue is one that works for you. Have fun with it.
