Jill and I know from personal experience that safety is an illusion. No amount of guns or other stuff can insure you will not fall prey to one of these *&^&%$$. I can't call them animals as that would degrade the animal world and I think much more highly of them, even the snakes.
When we were cruising in Mexico we never even locked the boat. We always felt safe and that included Jill walking at dawn with other ladies from other boats.
BUT, we do have personal knowledge of two boats (single handers) that were involved in murder during our 4+ years in the Sea of Cortes, and the find (by a friend) on Isla Espiritu Santo (pictured below).
BUT, after our tragedy right in the USA, cruising still feels a lot safer to us then living in a metropolitan area in the U.S.
