Generally... Like summer winds on the coast of Maine. They're lighter in the morning but somehow that has become, "You can't sail in the morning in Maine" by many accounts. Nonsense. Here's a mid August day, 10:00am, and we're sailing at just over 3 knots. The wind is from the east, that's not unusual in the mornings on Penobscot Bay. It's very light though, under 5 knots, not enough wind for some boats or likely some sailors to sail in.
The upside is, this is a saturday off Camden Maine, and we're the only boat on the water. We carried this morning easterly for a couple of hours before the sun warmed things up for the southwesterly to kick in, then the sails started to show.
A little like the lobster buoys myth. I've read people who say they won't go into Penobscot Bay because that's where the buoys start to get thick. Nonsense again. There are places where the buoys are quite thick, but this is "generally" how thick they are in the bay.
