I bought a Standard HX-850s in event I ever go overboard, so hopefully I'll be able to communicate with someone nearby who can assist.
Considering all my sailing is in populated coastal areas, when single-handing I would get a faster response if I could contact a local boat or send out a DSC-distress call with GPS coordinates than if I had to rely on SARSAT's process. However, if I sailed further offshore I'd pick up a PLB.
Mostly I sail with my wife or guest crew who would need coaching through retrieving mea if I went overboard. So when I leave the cockpit I wear a PFD (with light) and clip on the waterproof VHF. Yes I admit we should practice the drills more and my wife should be able to retrieve me without guidance, but reality is we both have our roles and "comfort zones" as crew.
The Standard HX-850s is an excellent radio that floats and has a built in GPS with DSC calling. It is replaced by the Standard HX-851, but some sellers still have inventory of the older model at blow out prices.
