I learned to steer an outboard with my right hand, sitting on the port side of the boat - but that's only because my dad was on the other side, and I learned by "helping" him steer.
I find it to be a real pain now, because there's no way I can steer an outboard with my left hand now (too ingrained this way), but yet the tiller arm is always on the port side of the motor. This means that I have an awkward reach back to it (even when I sit to port), whereas people controlling it with their left hand have it really nice and easy. Likewise, when I come alongside, I usually try to do so on my non-motor-hand side (so I can reach the boat; conditions-allowing of course), and again I'm completely cramped and need a 280ยบ shoulder socket in my tiller arm. The people steering on the opposite side can work it much more easily.
If only outboards were like refrigerators and I could just change the tiller handle over to the other side!
