Yes, a small soldering iron works great.
Why not just loop through the bars/handles?
I'd keep it simple like this image

I use loops of Dyneema with Prussic instead of rolling hitch for anchor bridle
What about sewing velcro on it.
Why not use an Padeye or Folding Padeye and then simple attach the stap to it?
Do you want them to slide down the handhold?
