And I make the same mistake with varnish regularly, not enough initial coats(weather, time, you know...).

Varnish is analogous to bricks for how simple a material it is. Both are part of simple systems that work well, but are not forgiving of mistakes. Not putting enough varnish coats on initially, is like not putting enough cement in your mortar.

It looks fine for a little while, then falls apart very quickly.
