I do run fresh water through the head about every 3 months or so, just to ensure that things don't stick... and since I flush with freshwater, the only "buildup" I encounter is with "other contaminates."

None the less, I do agree with regular maintenance... and as has been pointed out... far easier to do on my time than repair time. Also a good way to get familiar with the system... should something happen in the future.
