() You have to time your exit out the Gate! I have seen boats sailing full out in a nice breeze heading out the gate, making backward way!
Also, when you go into Pier 39 marina, they often have a boat standing by to help. You can get a cross current in there.
Also, one of my favorite places to spend a holiday weekend and mix with the tourists! 
Just GREAT early in the AM as it's opening up!!!
