Always thought I'd do the Oliver Noort idea

A good idea (assuming the rudder is still with the boat but system is broken) is to have a 1" hole near the top outside of the rudder. If the steering system breaks all you need to do is put a line through it with a knot on either side of the hole. Pull the line around the hull to the primary's and winch the rudder where you want.

It's ready and passive ready to use in an emergency.
