I'm the same way, there has to be enough for good steerage.

And I'm sure that varies widely and my boat is an antique. But it has a SA/D of about 17 so it's better than some.

There was a big trimaran in the Fox Island Thoroughfare, showing off last weekend. It was impressive actually. They were sailing westward through as we crossed going eastward. Wind at that point was quite a bit past our beam, it was just forward of theirs, and didn't they fly past Northhaven! This is a crowded harbor area between islands so it was quite a sight passing close by.

Then a J42 came in behind us as we turned DDW for the dog leg in the middle. They did catch us, but not as quickly as I thought they would. And then we lifted our board, and took a different route inside an island with a better reaching angle, and wind, and caught them(on shorter course ) It was amazing as we stayed mid 7's on the gps, with bursts to 8, in the flat lee of the nearby shore.

We were all racing in the Fox Island Thoroughfare, it was great. The J did pass us again in Eastern Penbay, of course. We were both happy then.
