one of the few times I've felt very strongly the NWS could have done a better job

I saw it earlier in the day when it was in Indiana and thought "boy, that looks weird." We went out for the evening and when we came back we could see lightning in the far distance. I checked the NWS weather and they were still just saying "a chance of thunderstorms." I checked the radar, saw it and started checking severe weather reports through the IWIN system (http://www.nws.noaa.gov/view/national.php?map=on) and saw that for the areas just ahead of the storm they were warning of 60+ mph winds. At that point the storm was in West to central Maryland but there were no warnings on our local weather until it reached Baltimore. I think the storm hit somewhere between midnight and 12:30. We had already made the decision to stay up based on what we had seen but most people probably went to bed before the warnings were issued. As it was we were very fortunate and had almost no damage and no power interruption. I don't know if warnings would have made a difference for the two children in the NJ campground who were killed when a tree fell on them but I'm sure there are people asking that question.
