Actually, hogfish here are rare as hen's teeth. That is only the second one I've speared and the third one I've seen in 2 years of fishing almost daily here. This one was 9lbs and the other was 12lb. The one I missed (grrrr) was in that range also. They seem to be bigger here than in the Bahamas. The groupers are larger too - 20-40lb Nassaus and Blacks are common, and I have seen a few Blacks that have topped that. Nassaus do not seem to be distributed widely here, but I have found a couple of established populations in very specific areas (that will also remain a secret).
Best thing about down here is that there is no ciguatera so you aren't limited to small fish or only certain species. Barracuda is fine and large groupers, etc are no problem.
And we agree with you - keep the lobsters and give us the hogfish. The only other fish that comes close for us is Cubera snapper, although we do like grouper.
