"It's a hard knock life, for us,..." Every profession and occupation has it's hard luck stories, but the lobstering industry is unique I think. Take a naturual resource that supplies the booty, add no real regulation once you've paid your license fee, and then let this vast group of independent businesses go wild!
Now throw in the latest curve ball by mother nature, too many lobsters, too soon. This has the whole lot of them wondering what to do. Some are now simply piling in tons of lobster at half the price they're used to, to make up for the lower price. $1.35 in STonington lately, waste of time.
Boats are sunk, people shoot to kill in plain daylight, it's bizzare in regular times, now we're into a whole new episode. There will be new stories to tell, soon.
But the sinking and shootings, that's the lunatic fringe. And all lunatic fringes are what we get so much news about. The regular lobsterman is just fishing the way he always does.
For this new event, many are just sitting it out, working on the house, doing some part time work, etc. until the price goes back up. That will work pretty well for the bulk of them, be good for the whole industry.
