As numbers AWG get smaller the wire gets bigger #6 is smaller than #1; after #1 it changes to 0 00 000 0000 or 1-aught (1/0) 2 aught (2/0) etc then it changes to circular mils or thousand circular mils ie 350 mcm or 500 mcm. I don't wonder how someone that does not work with wire a lot can get confused with this system. Using Paul's excellent reference to Blue Sea wire calculator I came up with #1 AWG wire for a 120 amp load for my distance and voltage, so I up sized one to 0 or 1/0 or 1 aught.
