It's basically boiled linseed oil with a little color(different ones are available) and some other additives. It creates a great finish, a good sealer for an oil on raw wood and should fill the grain a bit where varnish is thin or gone all together. It's simple to apply(do it twice).

When(if) you get around to re-varnishing, you can go right over it when it's fully dry.
