We are planning on leaving the PNW next summer to cruise in Mexico and the South Pacific. The dinghy for our 34' sailboat is a 10' portabote that we've had for years and (acknowledging that all dinghies are a compromise) think works very well for us. However, there may be some problems with a portabote in our intended cruising grounds. We have heard from experienced cruisers that an inflatable with a strong outboard is the way to go to get through surf when beaching in remote areas. Specifically, they mentioned the coast between Ensenada and Cabo which is apparently hundreds of miles of surf. She said a portabote is too rigid. I've never actually tried to beach the portabote in surf and I wonder if anybody can share their experiences.
The other thing I'm wondering about is how to protect the portabote from theft or joyriding kids overnight. I don't want to fold it every evening and don't have davits. Hoisting it and leaving it unfolded on deck may be an option. Any other ideas?
BTW, we've already replaced and reinforced the oarlocks, bought good, long, oars, intend to install wooden seats, and will somehow seal the black flotation foam that I know starts crumbling in the sun. These are the problems I know about and accept because I'm so pleased with the portabote's toughness, rowing performance, stowability, high initial stability, and lack of appeal to others. We have a 3.5 HP outboard.
