We sometimes put a large candle in the firebox just for the glow. An oil lamp might put out some heat.

The fireplace is fun(and tricky in some winds), anybody that has sat next to it is mesmerized. The firebox is behind a grate in the bulkhead to the head, so the head is the warmest place in the boat.
