I did that trip late last May in a large Island Packet. We went outside of N12 to be safe.

But in mid March the winds will likely be from the northeast and that will be right on your nose. You could wait (and wait) for southerly winds, but why not do the ICW. If you can motor at 6 kts you can do it in three days to Norfolk.

Then think seriously about going up the Chesapeake, across the C&D canal and down the Delaware to Cape May and then around NJ to NYC. You might find that course gets you there faster than waiting on the weather. And what is the hurry. NYC, Newport and Boston will be cold in April.

Mid to late March is going to be tough going north. Been there, done that.
