Several years ago, we had a NEaster go through our mooring field, popping one (and only one) boat off it's mooring. His transom hung rudder hung up on my mooring pennant, and we ground together until his rudder hardware wore through my pennant and we both went ashore. His insurance claimed 'Act of God' and wouldn't pay - mine did, less deductable.
His mooring tackle was still attached to his bow - I pulled it up and had a look at it. The shackle that let go was gone, but the one above it had nothing to secure the pin. No wire, no tie wrap, nothing! IMHO, it wasn't an act of God, rather an act of STUPID!
Not sure of the moral here. His insurance co was one of the retired military/gov't employee things which I suspect keeps their rates low by such things as the 'act of god' clause for folks with claims against them. Wonder what happened when he filed his damage claims? Perhaps they hit him with the same 'act of god' clause, and wouldn't pay him either???
