Phoenix lock makes very nice stuff
A crooked 6" piece of nearby sapling? Scallop shells?
Twigs and such are what I'd use. But there's tons of cast critters and even twigs in the markets right now.

Cleats
Good idea. Generic rope cleats are available at real hardware stores.
Bought some there for two bucks, made fence and gate pulls on my gals' farm.
I've had a couple customers do that with kitchen cabinets I have built.
