Thanks for the advice. As it turns out, one screw fell out and the other two were loose in the chain sprocket.

So it was a fortuitous faux pas. Retightening, greasing, glad I pulled it.
An eye dropper and patience, that sounds good. I depend on the compass less and less for navigation but I still have the habit of using it for bearings and planning tacks. And it's a nice cockpit light at night,,....
