The "plug" (not really an expansion bolt, per se) is similar to a drywall anchor.

The put a calcium anchor (instead plastic used in a wall anchor) and screw the pin into it. His descripiton was a slower process where the bone simple starts filling in and calcium sort-of disolves or is eaten away. I may not have the physiological or biological process correct.
