I posted GYRE last season. Apparently, the redesign of the 41' Ohlsen cruiser/racer into a Daysailer, is a success. She's getting some new additions such as an extending sprit and a roller furling Code 0. This redesign idea was seat of the pants, I'm told, yet has surprised many that said, the redesign was not a good idea.
Definitely not a 60's cruiser/racer anymore, but she looks right to my eye. Low and sleek and well scaled.
The redesign that basically cut 3 feet of the cabin off, was inspired by the desire for an over sized cockpit for sailing a large family. It's hard to photograph the reality of this cockpit, it's bigger than it looks in this photo.
A description would be; take the typical and more than ample cockpit in a 60's style 41'er, that could hold a full racing crew,...then add 3 or so feet of stolen cabin, and you have GYRE. (I think the new coaming is key in the success)
Now the quiz: GYRE's owner is one of many nephews of what well known New England Sailor in this photo sailing a plywood Sailfish(the first boat I sailed alone as a kid)?
