Just about any older design looks better without lifelines or

pushpits and pulpits.
But cruising off-shore they are a necessity. I don't believe anyone who has done ocean passages and claims they never touched a lifeline or stantion if only to gain balance going around the deck. We had not yet installed ours for the first months around San Francisco Bay, but you can bet your sweet bippie they were in place before going out the gate.
